Solarus blog: Solarus integrated energy system solutions for residential apartments to meet BENG requirements

Limited roof-space of apartments provide a big challenge to meet BENG 3 requirement (renewable energy share > 50%). Solarus hybrid PVT PowerCollectors are best fit for the limited roof-space and to meet BENG 3 indicator, as PowerCollector maximizes energy generation per given roof area due to its innovative concentrating hybrid technology (heat & electricity). Our integrated solutions with PowerCollectors and heat pump for heating and hot water can improve the renewable energy share of limited roof-space. For instance, heat produced by PowerCollectors can be directly used for heating and hot water and electricity produced by PowerCollectors can be used to run the heat pump.

What are BENG requirements?
In the Netherlands, as of 1 July 2020, all new buildings should meet Bijna Energie Neutraal Gebouw (BENG – nearly zero energy building) requirements.

BENG1: Energy requirement for heating and cooling should be less than 25 kWh/m2a
BENG2: Primary fossil energy use should be less than 25 kWh/m2a
BENG3: Share of renewable energy should be higher than 50%

Challenges:
BENG 1 and 2 Indicators can be met by improving insulation levels, high-efficient glazing, window to wall ratios, airtightness and using highly efficient energy systems. However, to reach 50% or more renewable energy share, limited roof-space of the apartment makes it very challenging.

Possible Solution:
Solarus hybrid PVT PowerCollectors are best fit for the limited roof-space and to meet BENG 3 indicator, as PowerCollector maximizes energy generation per given roof area due to its concentrating hybrid technology. Our integrated solutions with PowerCollectors and heat pump for heating and hot water can improve the renewable energy share of limited roof-space. For instance, heat produced by PowerCollectors can be directly used for heating and hot water and electricity produced by PowerCollectors can be used to run the heat pump.

For a typical apartment building, with 80-100 apartments, our integrated energy system solutions can reach 50-75% of renewable energy share depending on the demand and available roof-space.

We, at Solarus, thrive for affordable and sustainable energy solutions!
