Private Hospital in Cape Town

A high-efficiency renewable energy system was installed at a hospital in Cape Town, combining advanced PV-T (Photovoltaic-Thermal) technology with heat pump integration to deliver both thermal and electrical energy.

System Highlights:

  • 100 PV-T collectors installed, covering 200m², producing:
    • 137 kWp thermal output
    • 38 kWp electrical output
  • Projected annual outputs:
    • 102,933 kWh solar thermal energy
    • 47,034 kWh solar electrical energy
  • Integrated with 12,500 litres of existing hot water storage
  • Replacement of 2 x 54 kW heat pumps (COP 1.14) with new high-efficiency water-to-water heat pumps using chiller waste heat, achieving a COP 5.0
  • Heat pump performance:
    • 84,767 kWh of thermal energy delivered annually
    • 16,953 kWh of electricity consumed annually
  • Total hospital hot water demand: 187,700 kWh/year
  • Previous heat pump electricity consumption: 154,489 kWh/year

Monitoring & Control:

  • Real-time monitoring via Resol (thermal), Stiebel Eltron (heat pumps), and Fronius (PV)

This system demonstrates a fully renewable, integrated energy solution—where PV-T generation alone offsets 100% of the heat pump’s energy use—delivering significant energy savings and carbon reduction.
